OK so before Utopia airs I want  to state my views on Doc/Jack.

I never really thought that 9 liked Jack much. I just got the impression that he only put up with him because Rose liked him. Jack was really quite immature at that stage and the Doctor being 900 odd years old found him a bit irritating. 9 had a lot of contained excitement and I think to people like that overly confidant people can be really quite irritating at times. He always seems to see Jack as a bit of a liability - especially at the beginning. I think this was changing as Jack changed towards the end but I'm not sure if the Doctor totally trusts him.

Jack really admired the Ninth Doctor. And yes I think he loved him. But I don't think it would have worked between them because Jack (in Doctor Who) had such a light personality and Nine's was a lot not darker but heavier. (If that makes any sense). He has a lot more responsibility and find the world more serious - yes he jokes around but that's his way of  coping with the terrible world he finds himself  in. Jack still has the childish belief that nothing can hurt him - like with the Chula ambulance and he's convinced that it's harmless. It's not that he hasn't had bad experiences in his life - we know about his friend dying eg. but it doesn't clouded his outlook.

And then we come to the Tenth Doctor and Torchwood!Jack and the positions are reversed. Ten is definitely lighter than Nine, the Time War is less oppressive  - maybe it was Rose's influence. He can be very dark and obviously feels things very deeply but in his day to day life he is able to hide the "dark" side of is personality much like Jack in Doctor Who. He chooses to be more lively and carefree. Now Torchwood!Jack is a lot darker. He has the burden of responsibility and life has made him not bitter exactly but more cynical certainly. He no longer assumes that things are going to be harmless. This could mean that the Doctor and Jack get on better - they can see each other in each other, or it could mean they don't because they've both changed too much. Jack wants to go back to being the childish person without responsibility that he was before but with the Doctor taking on that role and him realising just how much he left behind this might not work. If life has changed you it's very hard to go back and stay there. Especially when so many things have changed "at home."

I think before Jack either worked for others or for himself, he never had other people relying on him. That's why he found it easier for the Doctor to take control (even if they did have some teething issues) Jack liked to be in control but not to be responsible is how I see it. But now he has had he experience of other people relying on him for a long time and it may be harder to relinquish control to this Doctor.

Anyway it will be interesting to see what the writer's do next week and beyond and I just hope they give explanations and try to tie in what happened/will happen in Torchwood. I have a horrible feeling that they won't address how much darker TW!Jack was or not give a reason for it. I do understand the not being able to talk about Torchwood issues but I really wish they would try not to contradict each other (like with the end of EOD!)
